HISTORY

The archaeological remains found in the municipality of Marratxí prove that the area was populated by almost all the civilizations that have inhabited Mallorca: the Talaiotic, Roman, Arab and Medieval Christian cultures. In 1229 the Catalan conquered Mallorca which had been under Muslim rule for 300 years. King Jaume I divided the conquered land and gave Marratxí to Berenguer de Palou, the Bishop of Barcelona. The first parish built in the municipality was Santa Maria de Marratxí. It was founded in the 13th century. The Church of Sant Marçal in Sa Cabaneta was built at the end of the 17th century. It was a place of pilgrimage that united the people in their devotion to the patron saint of Marratxí. During the 18th and 19th centuries the municipality experienced a growth in population and the formation of Pòrtol, Sa Cabaneta, Es Pla de na Tesa and Es Pont d'Inca. At the beginning of the 20th century Es Pont d'Inca gained importance due to the Palma-Inca train which favoured trade. The first civil airport in Mallorca was built in Son Bonet, between Es Pont d'Inca and Es Pla de na Tesa. In the 1960s it was moved to Son Sant Joan.
